Magnetrons convert energy into high-frequency radiation. They are critical for advanced deposition processes, such as magnetron sputtering, RF IBS, PIAD, and PECVD, where their ability to generate stable and efficient electromagnetic waves makes them indispensable.
And among the manufacturers, I-Photonics is a key player, with their magnetrons setting the benchmark for quality. Their advantages include high performance across various modes, proven reliability with a long service life, and excellent signal accuracy.
Furthermore, I-Photonics produces both classic cylindrical and modern planar magnetrons – just to suit any technical requirement.
What Exactly is a Magnetron Device and How it Works?
A magnetron is a device that generates microwave radiation, typically used in advanced deposition processes such as magnetron sputtering.
This happens through the interaction of an electron stream with a magnetic field – inside the device’s vacuum chamber, electrons are emitted from the cathode and accelerate towards the anode. An applied magnetic field bends their trajectory, causing them to follow a circular path. As the electrons pass by the resonant cavities in the anode, they transfer energy, generating high-frequency oscillations.
The energy from the oscillations is then coupled out via an antenna right into a waveguide.
It is important to clarify a common misconception: magnetrons do not leak or emit harmful radiation. This is a misunderstanding. Magnetrons are designed with strict safety measures to prevent any radiation leakage during operation, ensuring that they function safely within controlled environments and do not pose any risk to users.
